The Swerve — Summary

Summary Read the full essay.

In January 1417 an unemployed papal secretary named Poggio Bracciolini rode out from Constance to monasteries that kept books nobody read, and in one of them found Lucretius, unconsulted for five centuries. He had a copy made and sent it to Niccolò Niccoli, who hoarded it for over twelve years; Poggio’s own transcript is lost, and every printed Lucretius descends from the copy of the copy. Deep in the poem’s second book sits the clinamen: atoms falling in parallel would never collide, so at uncertain times and places an atom swerves, no more than the least possible, and the swerve is where novelty and freedom enter a universe of falling. It is the most compact statement anyone has produced of how culture works, and it was never asked what happens to the swerve when the fall is watched.

Deviation has a documented season. Sociolinguists tracking any change in progress find the adolescent peak: each cohort learns the caretakers’ register, pushes past it in the years when the peer group becomes the audience that matters, increments the change beyond the cohort before, and stabilizes. Two structural features did all the work. The swerve had an audience of peers, its unintelligibility to the schoolroom part of the payload. And the schoolroom did not update: it heard every slanting, deplored it, and went on teaching the standard, revising on the timescale of careers. The schoolroom heard every swerve and updated on none of them, and the not-updating was the dark, the accumulation period run in miniature through every cohort of fifteen-year-olds.

The new standard revises within the season. People are already slanting away from the machine register, which acquired tells within two years of ubiquity, and the avoidance of the tells became a folk forensics: rougher syntax, deliberate error, the visible seam carrying the new meaning that a person was here. It is an anti-language whose dominant order is a cadence. But the tells and their avoidance are text, and here the swerve has a property the funeral dishes never had: it pays. Proof of humanity commands a premium wherever the assisted alternative is cheap, which is now everywhere, so the marks of the unassisted hand are read, priced, and reproduced, and the register learns to produce the appearance of not being itself. A swerve the standard can hear is not a rebellion but a donation. Escalation does not escape, because a selection function amplifies whatever the swerve arrives at, and the costume wears the bend within the season. The swerve used to be how a generation got a voice; inside the hearing it is how the standard gets its next one. And the absorption is politest where most complete: the teacher who scolds your slang concedes it is yours, while the teacher who shows up wearing it has taken it.

What is lost is not the impulse, which is developmental and permanent, but the gap between being heard and being read. The deflections that still work are the corrected claim’s two: outrunning the cycle, a sprint in which each evasion vocabulary is spent in the spending, or happening where the filters price it at nothing, a darkness on loan from indifference. Neither can be handed to a fifteen-year-old as a plan. The essay wonders what the peak will look like in the first cohort raised entirely inside the hearing, and closes on the five centuries the poem of the uncaused deviation spent catalogued, shelved, and unconsulted, surviving because it was worth exactly nothing to the standard of its day.
