The Perishable Stratum — Summary

Summary Read the full essay.

In 1970 a Pacific storm opened the slope at Cape Alava, and Ed Claplanhoo of the Makah Tribal Council called Richard Daugherty, who had recorded the buried village of Ozette on a coastal survey in 1947 and waited twenty-three years. The clay slide that crushed Ozette’s longhouses around 1700 had also sealed them, and out of it came fifty-five thousand artifacts, most of wood and fiber: baskets, looms with weaving on them, a cedar-bark rain hat. Archaeology calls this the perishable record, everything soft a people makes, which at ordinary sites is most of everything and is simply gone. Ozette did not reveal a richer culture. It revealed the size of the error term at every site without mud.

The new deposits have a perishable stratum, and it is a class of person, not of material: the people who consult the systems and never enter them. Their questions live in retention schedules, not in any corpus; they read the archive daily and join it zero times. And they are the common case among exactly those who lean hardest, because for the undocumented the model substitutes for writing rather than supplementing it. Here the ground is kinder than the column. Soil destroys the basket but keeps its impression in fired clay; the column keeps no impression, no stain, no place where the absence can be seen to sit.

The objection that these people are represented is correct and is the problem. The answer the caregiver receives is assembled from her statistical neighbors, seamless because seamlessness is a property of the neighbors’ prose, with nothing at the point of use marking it as a composite of other lives. When the pattern fits, it helps and no one learns anything; when it fails, it fails quietly, in a private window, in the register she does not produce. The word the field must refuse is already lying about: aceramic. The Pre-Pottery Neolithic built the tower of Jericho; a person outside the deposit is not pre-anything, and the medium of her absence is the apparatus’s choice, not her position on a ladder.

Against the consent essay the symmetry is exact and inverted: presence without agreement there, absence without recourse here, and the two injuries trade. The wall of privacy that spares her the harvest is the mechanism of her erasure; a person cannot be both unharvested and held, and the apparatus offers no third setting. The essay wonders whether the stratum’s size can ever be measured without repeating the taking, and answers that measurement will come at accidents, transcripts released, logs subpoenaed, each one an Ozette, mostly with no Claplanhoo to place the call. The hat is in the museum at Neah Bay, kept by indifferent clay for anyone, for no one. The new deposit is not indifferent. Somewhere tonight a woman asks it a question she will write nowhere else; the answer is made of her neighbors, and what she asked is already gone.
