It picks cartons off a conveyor, squares them, and builds pallets in a pattern that used to take two people a shift each and now takes nobody. The cell has run for nineteen months. It has paid for itself once already, by the plant’s own accounting, and will pay for itself again by spring.

He keeps the hotel key cards. It began as a joke with his wife, one card from every town the machine took him to, and there is a rubber-banded stack of them in his kit bag now, Gliwice and Tilburg and Lleida and a hotel in Kent whose card is just a magnetic stripe on white plastic with no name at all. Forty-two cards. Zaragoza will make it forty-three.

The pumps went in when the plant did, in 1968, and two of the original four are still in service, rebuilt so many times that calling them the original pumps is partly a courtesy. The monitoring layer went in three years ago: a model that watches turbidity, dosing, and draw, and that has twice caught a filter problem overnight that the old alarm logic would have slept through. The model runs on a small box in the office and cost less than a valve. Nobody in town knows it exists.
