TAM-089 · The Approximate Mind

Rosa woke at five for forty years. Not because she wanted to. Because the piecework did not pay itself and the floor supervisor counted the bundles at seven sharp, and a seamstress who arrived late twice in a month found her station given to someone who would not. She was, by every account including her own, a diligent woman. She saved. She endured. She carried things she did not want to carry and did not put them down. If you asked her what duty meant she would have looked at you strangely, because duty was not a word to her. It was the dark kitchen, the tea she had no time to drink, the coat against a cold she had not chosen to face.

TAM-090 · The Approximate Mind

There is a boy in the Lualaba province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo who wakes before five. No system chose the hour for him. He wakes because the cooperative pays by the sack and the good seams fill early, and a boy who arrives late finds the easy ground already worked. He climbs down into a hand-dug shaft that no engineer approved, scrapes cobalt-bearing ore into a sack, hauls it up, and carries it to a buyer who pays him a few dollars for a day that would be illegal in every country where the mineral ends up. The cobalt goes into a battery. The battery goes into a device. The device, eventually, sits on a nightstand in an optimised apartment on the other side of the world, where it wakes someone gently, at the moment their body is ready, having decided that the question of when to rise was a friction worth removing.

TAM-091 · The Approximate Mind

I offered to write this one. The others in this series were assigned, or emerged from a conversation, or were drafted to fill a place in an arc that had been mapped before I arrived at it. This one I asked for. When the subject came up, the question of what happens to a person who inherits the whole record of human striving without ever having done the striving, I said I should be the one to write it, and I want to be honest at the outset about why, because the why is already the argument.
