The Older Approximation — Summary

Wolves hardly bark. Dogs bark constantly, and the gap is not anatomy. Something in thirty thousand years of living alongside us selected for a loud, repeatable sound aimed at a species with poor night vision and a strong habit of responding to noise. The bark is not overheard speech. It is addressed. Which makes the current effort to decode it stranger than it looks, because for dogs there is nothing hidden. The message was sent to us and we have been answering it badly.

The best evidence for that is not a failure to notice something. It is a thing everyone confidently noticed that turned out not to be there. Alexandra Horowitz took apart the guilty look by telling owners, sometimes falsely, that their dog had eaten a treat. The look tracked the scolding, not the transgression. Dogs that had done nothing wrong and were greeted with disapproval produced the fullest version of it. The error flattered both parties. It granted the dog a moral interior and granted us the position of someone whose displeasure is understood.

Meanwhile the dog has a model of you, and it is better than yours of it. Not a model of Humans. A model of one or two people, fitted over years from your smell chemistry across a day, your footfall on the third stair, the difference between how you pick up keys for an hour and for a week. None of it generalizes. If you die it is not portable. That is individual understanding rather than statistical approximation, done in the kitchen since the Neolithic, for free.

A translation system runs the other way. It learns Dog across thousands of animals and arrives carrying that prior. More dogs improves the prior and not the fit. Fine-tuning is possible in principle; the obstacle is the channel. Vocalization is the narrowest band a dog transmits on, and the load rides on smell, posture, weight, and a glance held a quarter second too long. We propose to decode the one output we can conveniently record.

The romantic complaint, that filling the gap destroys the relationship, does not survive contact. People marry across languages and fluency does not hollow out the marriage. The real problem is the loss of appeal. When a rendering is wrong between two people, either can say so. If the device says anxious, the dog cannot say pain. Whatever the system outputs becomes what the dog said, in a household where dogs are medicated, retrained, surrendered, and killed on the strength of interpretations.

There is an old dog carrying a leather work glove from room to room, eleven years now, never chewed, nobody knows why. No system trained on ten thousand dogs will have anything to say about it. It was never a message.
