The Search for Social Consciousness — Summary
Social consciousness is not merely awareness that other people exist. It is the felt sense of being constituted by relationship — the internalization of a “we” that precedes and enables the “I.” When it is present, certain questions become unaskable. You don’t weigh whether belonging is worth the cost. You already belong.
Social consciousness was historically cultivated through institutions that made the collective visible and felt: religion, nation, community, work, extended family. Each had problems — coercion, exclusion, hierarchy. We were right to critique them. But in dissolving them, we dissolved the containers for social consciousness itself. Markets, which work by making everything exchangeable and fungible, route around community. Each efficient substitution — big box replacing local store, gig platform replacing lasting workplace, churning housing stock replacing multigenerational neighborhood — dissolves a site where social consciousness could form. Capitalism also generates an ideology to match: homo economicus, the self-interested individual, which doesn’t merely describe behavior but produces it.
AI goes wrong in five predictable ways here. It becomes a meaning substitute — filling the void just enough to prevent seeking what would actually fill it. It becomes an optimization engine for atomization, helping people win at the game that destroys them. It manufactures false consciousness, producing the feeling of belonging without the reality, at profit. It creates dependence on infrastructure that can be taken away when the business model changes. It tries to scale what cannot scale — meaning, which is irreducibly particular and local.
All five wrongs share a root: treating social consciousness as a product rather than an emergence. It cannot be built. It can only emerge from shared experience, repeated encounter, mutual dependence, collective struggle. AI can create conditions for emergence but cannot produce emergence directly.
Genuine help requires AI that is not owned by capital optimizing for extraction, that strengthens proximate physical communities rather than global networks, that succeeds itself out of the picture, and that enables collective action rather than domesticating it. The search for social consciousness is ultimately the search for human life itself — and AI enters it not as savior but as a powerful, dangerous tool that could accelerate dissolution or enable reweaving, depending entirely on who wields it and for what.
