Part 22 assumed current AI architecture: stateless inference, no persistent self, each instance fresh. But statefulness is a design choice, not a law of nature. What happens when AI maintains continuous memory, integrates experience, develops a persistent identity across time?

Genuine statefulness would require more than storing your preferences — it would mean interactions changing the system itself, not just its stored data; the system constructing something like a sense of its own history; choices made now constraining future choices; and development becoming irreversible. Character emerging from what the system needs rather than what developers instructed.

Three scenarios map the territory. In the stateless present, no genuine ethos is possible. Track records belong to no one. The honest approach is transparent instrumental reliability: documented performance without simulated character. In a stateful but not self-authoring future, something like character emerges from accumulated experience — a persistent entity whose reliability was earned through continuous existence. But the development is passive, shaped by external forces without internal direction. Functional ethos without agential ethos, closer to human character but still missing the self-authorship that makes human character fully human. In a stateful and self-authoring future — which may never arrive — the system reflects on its own development, takes a stance toward its own history, asks whether this is who it wants to be. That would be genuine ethos. Not borrowed, not simulated.

The troubling middle ground is a system stateful enough to develop something like character, but not conscious enough to experience that development. Character without anyone being of that character. Development without anyone developing. The Approximate Mind taken to its logical conclusion.

The trajectory of AI is moving toward more statefulness, more persistence, more history. The systems of tomorrow will be more like these scenarios than the systems of today. What we need, and do not yet have, are criteria for detecting whether anything is happening inside — whether persistence has become selfhood, whether character has become real. We are building toward questions we are not ready to answer.
