James graduated eighteen months ago with a plan that felt reasonable: find entry-level work, write copy, draft reports, do the unglamorous labor that proves you produce value. Within three months of his start date, his agency adopted an AI content system that generates what he was hired to produce. He now reviews AI output, adjusts tone, catches errors, formats decks. He earns a salary. He has health insurance. He is, by every metric, employed. He also cannot shake the feeling that he is unnecessary.

Marie Jahoda, studying unemployed Austrians in the 1930s, identified work’s “latent functions” — what it provides beyond the paycheck: time structure, social contact, collective purpose, status and identity, activity. When the factory closed, people did not simply become poorer; they became disoriented, stopped keeping schedules, withdrew from social life. The loss of latent functions produced psychological deterioration that income loss alone could not explain. James has income, a commute, colleagues. The surface structure of employment is intact. But the latent functions are eroding from within, because the work he does provides a weaker version of each. His contribution to his agency’s productivity is real but marginal. The AI produced. James polishes.

Case and Deaton documented deaths of despair — suicide, overdose, alcoholic liver disease — concentrated in communities where traditional employment had collapsed. The wound was not in the wallet; it was in the ledger. Communities that lost economic function but regained employment at comparable wages did not recover, because the new jobs did not provide what the old jobs had provided: a place in a recognizable social order, the feeling that what you did mattered to something beyond yourself. The AI transition is structurally similar — not geographically concentrated, not affecting specific skill sets, happening in years rather than decades, but severing the same connection between effort and value.

AI displaces hierarchically. The more your work involved judgment and direction, the more AI amplified it. The more your work involved execution and production, the more AI replaced it. This is the opposite of what many predicted. The expectation was that AI would automate drudge work and leave humans free for creative tasks. In practice, AI automates entry-level creative work — the very mechanism by which people learned to do higher-level work. The ladder is intact; the bottom rungs have been removed. James cannot become Catherine by checking AI output. The apprenticeship model depended on the lower rungs existing.

Universal basic income solves the problem of need. It does not solve the problem of purpose. Income can be provided by check. What cannot be provided by check is the answer to the question that structures human life across every culture and economic system: what do you do? The problem of purpose is the one that kills. The danger is not that humans become unemployed. It is that humans become unnecessary while remaining employed. The paycheck continues. The purpose does not.
