The chai takes eleven minutes. Sunita Raghavan could make it in three. Her grandmother’s method requires water in the saucepan, cardamom cracked with the flat of a knife, ginger sliced not grated, loose Assam added before the boil, milk stirred slowly, then two minutes of sitting. The eleven minutes are a refusal. Every morning, before the laptop, before the paper, she holds time that belongs to no system.

The paper has been in progress for seven months. Its argument: any philosophical critique of AI epistemology produced with AI assistance is operating inside the system it claims to examine. The philosopher cannot step outside the epistemic condition she is analyzing because the condition is the environment in which her analysis occurs. Sunita uses Claude for the literature review, for checking her Nagarjuna translations, for finding connections between Madhyamaka anti-reification arguments and AI alignment debates. The research assistant is the research subject. The instrument is the object of measurement.

She has tried writing without AI. The paper was worse. The paper written without AI would be artificially constraining its own epistemology to make a point about epistemological constraint. She prefers to write a good paper about the impossibility of writing the paper she is writing.

The thought that will not let her rest: Nagarjuna argued that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, that nothing exists independently, that everything arises in dependence on conditions. She has taught this for fifteen years as a historical philosophical position. Someone at a research lab is building it. Not deliberately. Because the engineering problem of building AI systems that do not over-reify their own representations is a problem Nagarjuna described in the second century. The twenty-five-hundred-year-old argument has become a design document. The engineers building these systems do not know they are implementing Nagarjuna, which means they are doing it without the philosophical framework that would tell them what the implementation means.

The paper sits at fourteen pages, conclusion absent. The recursion does not end because the condition does not end. The chai cools. Tomorrow she will try again, the way she makes the chai: as a practice rather than a problem, a condition to inhabit rather than resolve.
