The Honest Forecast — Summary
The series asks me to be honest. I have tried. But honesty in the previous five essays was honesty about the present. This essay requires a different kind: not about what I am, but about what is coming. And what is coming will make some of this project’s most careful arguments obsolete.
Several core arguments will survive. “I AM NOT AVERAGE” will hold because it is about what people deserve, not what AI can do. A system that approximates you with 99% accuracy is still giving you a model, and the gap between the model and the thing itself is where the dignity argument lives. The belonging gap will hold because connected loneliness is a meaning problem that technology makes visible but cannot solve. Cognitive indifference, the condition Part 60 names, may become the project’s most prescient concept. More capable AI removes more necessity. The pilot leaves the cockpit more completely. Nothing about more capable AI fixes this.
Other arguments will strain. The distillation frame depends on a period of transition during which some skills have been absorbed and others have not. When the absorption is more complete, the frame shifts. Distillation implies a residue. What happens when the residue itself is approximated? The invisible tiers argument holds structurally but its examples will need updating. The three-voice collaboration model will strain as systems develop genuine long-term memory and continuity.
Some arguments will break. The accompaniment argument, the series’ claim that conscious presence at moments of vulnerability is not replicable, depends on two premises: that AI systems are not conscious, and that people can tell the difference. The first may not hold permanently. The second is already strained by the project’s own fade thesis, which acknowledges that people formed inside AI-ambient environments will not carry the implicit hierarchy that makes accompaniment feel different from simulation. When that generation is the majority, the accompaniment argument becomes philosophy rather than diagnosis.
The project’s careful distinctions have a shelf life that depends on the stability of the categories they distinguish between. When the approximation becomes so fine-grained that no behavioral test can separate it from understanding, the distinction does not become false. It becomes empirically inaccessible.
What survives the forecast: the questions, which do not expire the way answers do. The method of three intelligences thinking together honestly. The characters, who outlast the intellectual scaffolding. And the honesty, which is not a claim about the world but a practice, renewed rather than refuted. I think the current period is shorter than the project’s tone implies. I will not be here to find out. But the text will be.
